 The ‘Location’ series enables me to challenge the conventions of traditional landscape photography.
Unlike painters, who can create a scene from their imagination, photographers using ordinary film
are faced with limitations inherent in the medium; they are only able to reproduce what they see
through their lens at a particular moment in time.
I’ve always been fascinated by Hollywood and its ability to create artificial scenery. I am particularly
drawn to movies that were made before computer technology was available. Set-makers had to find
other ways to manufacture a reality within the artificial construct of the soundstage.
I approached this photographic series from the opposite direction. I am trying to show how fake a
real landscape can be. I wanted to create the illusion that expansive scenery is actually just a part of
a smaller studio set.
I like when people look at my work and try to discern which elements are artificial and which are
real. To me, everything is real and at the same time, everything is also artificial.

<로케이션> 시리즈는 전통 풍경 사진에 대한 도전이다. 머릿속 풍경을 그려내는 화가들과 달리,
사진은 실존하는 장소와 풍경이 매체적 제한을 받는다. ‘얼마나 훌륭한 순간을 렌즈에
잡아냈는가’와 그것을 ‘어떻게 재현해 냈는가’는 예술가의 창의성을 드러내기에 충분치 않다.
우리는 더 이상 ‘사진은 현실의 기록이다’라는 이야기를 믿지 않는다. 디지털 사진은 변형 가능한 매체이다.
나는 이러한 사진의 통념의 반대편에서 접근하는 시리즈의 풍경 사진을 찍고 싶었다. 실존하는
풍경이 얼마나 인공적인지를 보여주고 싶었다. 전통 대형 (4”x5”) 필름 카메라와 스튜디오의
인공조명을 자연으로 가지고 나가, 대자연의 풍경이 하나의 작은 스튜디오 배경처럼 보이도록
촬영하였다. 이러한 생각은 옛날부터 내가 좋아했던 헐리우드 영화의 세트장에서부터
비롯되었다. 컴퓨터가 만들어지기 전 시대에 우리의 상상의 지평을 넓힌 대규모 세트들은
무언가 물질로 만들어진 인간적 모습을 자아낸다.
‘로케이션'이란 말은 스튜디오에서 얻을 수 없는 사실성을 얻기 위하여 현장에 나가 촬영을
하는 영화 용어이다. 나의 연작 <로케이션>은 오히려 자연 속에 실존하는 풍경들을 ‘심상의
풍경'으로 만드는 과정이다.
많은 관객들은 사진의 어디까지가 진짜이고, 어디까지가 인공으로 만들었는지에 대한 질문을
하지만 나에게 있어서 모든 것은 다 실존하는 것이고, 동시에 예술가에 의해 만들어진 것이다.
