「我々は写真と絵画のいずれの操作を経由しても、最終的にはものの内面に真実を見る必要に迫られることになる。」

　私にとって写真と絵画の境界線はとても曖昧なものです。17世紀のオランダでフェルメールがカメラオブスキュラを用いて絵画を制作したように、古くから写真と絵画は密接な関係にあり、互いに影響を与え合ってきました。

　数千年から数万年ともいわれる絵画の歴史に対して、写真の歴史はわずか200年足らずです。しかし、それは感光材料の発明の歴史を写真の歴史と同一視するから短いのであって、世界を見る眼差しから生み出される表現と言う意味では、写真は絵画の長い歴史に含まれてもよいのではないでしょうか。
